As an advanced learner of Russian using participles in your speech will make you sound closer to a native Russian speaker.

To make a participle you need to take an infinitive and add a suffix

  • Делать - Делающий, we are adding suffix –ющ present tense active voice
  • Делать - делавший, we are adding suffix – вш past tense active voice
  • Делать – делаемый, we are adding suffix –ем present tense passive voice
  • Делать - деланный, we are adding suffix –нн past tense passive voice
Also, when we add prefixes to the participles, they define the perfect aspect.
Сделанный, переделанный, недоделанный.

Keep in mind, that changing prefixes will change the meaning of the participles’ action.

  • Переделанный- done over and over again
  • Недоделанный- something that hasn’t been done to the end.
  • Приделанный- something has been attached
  • Уделанный –figuratively something has been won over
  • Сделанный наспех проект, не принёс результата.
  • Человек, сделавший домашнее задание, был недоволен.

We also have adverbial participles in Russian.

Делать –делая, делав

We are adding suffixes –я, -в

  • Сделав многое, можно отвлечься.
  • Делая изо дня в день одно и то же, человек устаёт.

Technically, you can express your thoughts without participles. Adding them to your speech will excel you as a Russian speaker and using fine points of Russian will depict you as a connoisseur of Russian. Forming the participles from infinitive has already been a part of your learning. You need to revise it and perfectly slide it into your speech.
Attention! You thoughts will vary greatly. You will be looking for new words, forms, and phrases. Don’t stick to templates and clichés in Russian but rather ask for help from a Russian speaker on how to add speech patterns of participial clauses to your self-expression.

Compare:
  • Он начал рассуждать иначе. Когда он прочитал все книги, он начал рассуждать иначе. Прочитав все книги, он начал рассуждать иначе.
Мне в голову пришла интересная мысль. После того как он исписал столько листков бумаги, он начал рассуждать иначе. Исписав столько листков бумаги, мне в голову пришла интересная мысль.

I would like to suggest you change the verb читать into several forms of participles by adding all suffixes including adverbial participles. Write sentences, forming participial constructions. Show these sentences to your Russian teacher or your Russian conversational partner for a language review. Don’t forget to separate these dangling participial clauses with commas.
