Besides that, I enjoy to participate in different language exchange events, I’m skilled at teaching language to speaker of other languages.
Cantonese is a beautiful and special language. Why special? Because most of the people learn it for communicative rather than academic purposes, people are attracted by Hong Kong’s unique culture. Once you get the rhythm, you will see how creative and interesting the language is. Let’s have a glance at some facts about Cantonese -
⃝ First, Hong Konger and Taiwanese both write in traditional Chinese, but Hong Konger speak in Cantonese and Taiwanese speak in Mandarin.
⃝ Cantonese is a spoken language, it’s different from written language (huge difference), so it’s not necessary to learn written Chinese first to have a conversation. (Good news huh?) It’s like singing, you can sing do re mi without reading sheet music.
⃝ As part of the culture, it’s common to find English words in Cantonese conversation, that’s why you should learn from native speaker. For example, “very (好) sexy (性感)”, it’s common to hear people say “好 sexy” rather than “好性感”. But in some cases, like “drink (飲) coffee (咖啡)” even coffee is an international word, we say “飲咖啡” more than “飲 coffee”.
Sounds abstract? We will start from simple useful phrases, then we will go through various themes, like chitchatting with friends, ordering food, asking direction, describing feelings, etc. Depends on your interests, needs and progress, we can also explore Cantonese movies and songs!
